Her life is back on track, but a 23-year-old woman from Tilburg has been through hell for a long time. It started with a serious assault and sexual assault, in which she was the victim in her own apartment. The perpetrator was a 34-year-old Kosovar, the Breda court determined on Wednesday. The man was sentenced to two years in prison, followed by compulsory hospital treatment.

On a Sunday afternoon in September 2022, a complete stranger stood at the door of the Tilburg woman’s apartment. The man said at the hearing of the case two weeks ago that he was looking for a friend in the apartment building in Boxdonaf. When he saw the woman from Tilburg instead of him at the door, he was shocked and went crazy.

But the judge asked him how could anyone be shocked by “such a young, beautiful woman?” The Kosovar had no answer: “She did nothing, but I still felt attacked and wanted to defend myself.” He also admitted to drinking at least eight beers.

The woman knew it: She was dragged in by her hair, punched in the face several times, and then beaten again, she told police. The victim repeated her account at the hearing: “I have suffered physical and mental pain. In just a few minutes, you broke into my own home and turned my life upside down. Minutes felt like hours.”

The victim screamed for help after the attack. She was rescued by a friend of a downstairs neighbor, whose doorbell the Kosovo had rung moments earlier. The attacker jumped from the balcony in panic and then fell from a bicycle shed on the fifth floor. Here he could be arrested.

The prosecutor believed the victim. The judge also considered it proof that the Kosovo had severely assaulted her. The woman had a badly swollen eye, bruises all over her body and suffered a concussion. Almost two years later, she still hasn’t recovered. She is happy that, after a delay, she has completed her Fontys music training and can start further studies.

The Kosovo native admitted that he beat the woman. He denied that he repeatedly grabbed the victim’s crotch and tried to remove her pants.

At the hearing, four experts spoke to paint a picture of the perpetrator. One of them called him a “very sick” man. This was a man with a serious mental illness who also had difficulty dealing with (sexual) feelings, alcohol and cannabis. They believed that compulsory treatment by TBS was inevitable. The judge agreed: “Any other punishment or measure would not be sufficient to protect society.”
