Sudan’s military leader General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has survived an assassination attempt, a Sudanese military spokesman has told the BBC.

Nabil Abdallah put the blame on the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), with which the army has been battling for control of the country for the past 16 months.

He said two drones attacked a military graduation ceremony in the military-controlled area of Jabet in the east, killing five people.

Doctors Without Borders has not commented on the attack, which comes after General Burhan’s government agreed conditionally to take part in US-brokered peace talks next month.

Previous talks to end the conflict, which has caused the world’s largest humanitarian crisis, have failed as both sides refused to live up to their commitments.

More than 10 million people have fled their homes since the two former allies fell out over an internationally backed political plan towards civilian rule.

The Jabet Army Base is about 100 kilometers (62 miles) from Port Sudan, the army’s de facto capital and home to General Burhan.

Video footage shared by attendees of Wednesday morning’s ceremony showed military graduates marching in full dress uniforms before the gong sounded.

“The only party that is hostile to the Sudanese people and is attacking the Sudanese people is the rebel Rapid Support Forces,” General Abdullah told the BBC.

He thanked God that General Burhan and “all the commanders present were fine” and there were not many serious injuries.
