The Guyana government announced on Tuesday that it supports calls for a “transparent verification process” of Venezuela’s election results, a call that has been questioned by the Venezuelan opposition and parts of the international community.
In a statement, Guyana’s government, which has a long-running border dispute with Venezuela over the oil-rich Essequibo region, administered from Georgetown and claimed by Caracas, said “the Venezuelan people deserve no less.”
Venezuela’s National Electoral Council (CNE) officially declared President Nicolás Maduro the winner on Monday, after announcing late Sunday that he had received 51.2% of the vote, based on 80% of the minutes.
However, the Democratic Unity Platform (PUD) ensured that its presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia won the election with a large margin.
The Guyana government’s statement states that “elections are the exercise of the people’s constitutional right to elect the government of their choice in a free, fair and transparent process”.
“Everyone has a responsibility to ensure the integrity of this process through the highest standards of accountability, transparency and strict adherence to the rule of law,” he stressed.
Venezuela has also called on Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Peru, Panama, the Dominican Republic and Uruguay to withdraw their diplomats following violent protests and arrests in the wake of the election.
Maduro told the United Nations on Tuesday that demonstrations against the official election results were not peaceful protests but part of a coup against him.
The crisis between Venezuela and Guyana intensified late last year after a referendum in Caracas approved the annexation of Essequibo.
