Plant health clinic to be launched in Honiara for vegetable and root crop growers

A Plant Health Clinic (PHC) session for vegetable, fruit tree and root crop growers from communities surrounding New Zealand Camp east of Honiara is scheduled to take place next Tuesday.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock’s Honiara Urban Agriculture Extension Unit is organising the event at Camp New Zealand under its PHC Extension Programme.

The conference will provide an opportunity for farmers to bring their plants, fruits and root crops infected with pests and diseases to plant health doctors for screening and diagnosis.

It will also provide accurate advice and awareness on control and management measures such as pest-derived practices as best pest and disease control and management practices.

Farmers are therefore encouraged to collect infected crop samples (whole plants) from farm gardens instead of hand picking at the roadside and meet the PHC team next Tuesday.

Seven MAL extension and research staff have recently graduated from the Fiji National University (FNU) Koronivia Campus College of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (CAFÉ) as plant health doctors

The Department of Agriculture recently graduated seven plant health doctors from training Manage a plant health clinic In the Pacific island nation. The course is offered by the Fiji National University, Koronivia Campus, which houses the College of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (CAFÉ).

The training was for regional participants from Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji, Samoa and Tonga. These partner countries are participating in the Plant Health Clinics project under the ACIAR project Hort/2016/185 “Addressing Emerging Pest and Disease Threats in Pacific Island Horticulture”.

The training will also help officials gain more knowledge and skills on how to diagnose crop pests and diseases, soil nutrient deficiencies, etc., and enhance their ability to operate and manage future plant health clinics.
