July 31, 2024 – The election observation arm of the Organization of American States (OAS) said on Tuesday that it could not recognize the results of Venezuela’s National Electoral Council declaring President Nicolás Maduro the winner of Sunday’s disputed vote. Published.
The 35-member regional body, which will meet in Venezuela on Wednesday, said Venezuela’s National Electoral Council (CNE) had shown a bias towards the government.
The CNE said Maduro won with 51 percent of the vote, but the opposition said polls with 73 percent showed its candidate Edmundo Gonzalez had more than twice as many votes as Maduro.
Protests broke out in Venezuela, while the United States and several Latin American leaders refused to accept the results or said greater transparency was needed.
“The events of election night confirm a coordinated strategy developed in recent months to undermine the integrity of the electoral process,” the OAS report said.
It encompasses the illegalities and bad practices that occurred in this and past Venezuelan elections.
“The evidence suggests that the regime is attempting to ignore the majority wishes expressed in surveys of millions of Venezuelan men and women,” the report said.
“What happened shows once again that the CNE, its authorities and the Venezuelan electoral system are at the service of the executive, not the citizens.”
Maduro says Venezuela has the best and most transparent voting system in the world and accuses violent right-wing factions of trying to overthrow him illegally with foreign support.
It has support from China, Russia and some left-leaning Latin American countries.
The OAS report concluded that election results cannot be trusted and should not be recognized without public documentation to support the announced results.
