The Reserve Bank of Fiji has announced the appointment of renowned lawyer Wati Seeto as the first Financial Services Ombudsman.

Seeto has 25 years of legal experience, including 15 years in financial regulation and consumer protection, having held senior positions at the Capital Market Development Authority before moving to the RBF in 2010.

Her legal expertise and dedication to consumer advocacy make her the ideal person to lead this important initiative.

She will lead the newly created Financial Services Ombudsman Office (FSO) announced in the 2024 State Budget Speech.

The FSO will serve as an impartial forum for dispute resolution, specifically responsible for investigating, mediating and ensuring fair settlements between consumers and financial service providers licensed and regulated by the RBF.

The Office will play a key role in ensuring consumers have access to reliable mechanisms to resolve their grievances, thereby enhancing trust and confidence in Fiji’s financial sector.

RBF Governor Ariff Ali said: “The establishment of the FSO is an important milestone in our ongoing efforts to strengthen consumer protection and ensure the integrity of the financial system. We are confident that under the guidance of Ms. Seeto, the FSO will effectively address consumer concerns and contribute to a more transparent and accountable financial sector.”

Consumers seeking help from financial services institutions first need to exhaust the complaint channels currently provided by the financial institutions.

The FSO will begin operations on August 1, 2024.

Consumers can contact the office through various channels, including a dedicated email: complaints@rbf.gov.fj
