Nobel Prize winner in Economics Simon Kuznets once analyzed the world economy in this way. He said that the world economy is divided into four types of countries: developed countries, underdeveloped countries, Japan… and Argentina.

If you want to understand what happens when inflation gets truly out of control, look no further than Argentina, where annual inflation has been running at 124% over the past year. Argentina’s currency, the peso, is collapsing, poverty is over 40%, and the country may be on the verge of electing a far-right Liberal president who promises to replace the peso with the dollar. Even in a country that has known economic chaos for a long time, the situation is alarming.

In this episode, we travel to Argentina to find out: What is it like to live in an economic crisis? With the help of our tango dancer guides, we meet all kinds of people who are experiencing record inflation and political unrest. Because even as Argentina’s economy tanks, its annual World Tango Contest – the world’s largest tango competition – continues.
