USA Today The inaugural list of America’s Best Bars was just announced, and two New Jersey bars are on the list Success.
Irish pub Tierney’s Tavern in Montclair and iconic music venue Wonder Bar in Asbury Park round out the top 27 spots in the country.
The list is compiled by the newspaper group’s national network of food writers, including Arizona Republic and Florida Today; which includes their favorite pubs old and new, cocktail bars and beach bars.
At Wonder Bar, a popular spot on Ocean Avenue, rock bands play on stage while drinkers sit around the large circular bar built in the 1960s. Bruce Springsteen is a regular here and has performed here several times. This summer, New Jersey alternative rock band Dramarama played to a sold-out crowd as part of the state’s North to Shore festival. The colorful painting of Tilly, the smiling “funny face” from the amusement park, on the bar’s exterior has become a well-known symbol of Asbury Park and can be seen on T-shirts and mugs around the city. The painting was painted here in the 1950s.
Wonder Bar even hosted a Yappy Hour For customers who want to bring their dogsThe large outdoor space features a tiki bar and picnic tables. Shore singer-songwriter Nicole Atkins, of nearby Neptune, is scheduled to perform there on Sept. 12.

Tierney’s Tavern is a 90-year-old bar in Montclair, where college students, baby boomers and seniors gather around its retro wooden tables and seating. The Sopranos An episode was filmed at the bar, and actors William H. Macy and Emma Roberts had a drink here while in town filming a movie. This classic Irish pub is famous for its burgers and local bands upstairs. They even have a secret menu and claim to have the smallest liquor store in town, selling packaged beer, wine and spirits.
Some even say the place is haunted. Bartenders often report hearing footsteps on the second floor, as well as the sound of bottle caps hitting the walls and floor, even when the building is closed.
The Tierney family opened the pub in 1934 and still run it today.
