Sadly. The news was conveyed by the head of epidemiology at the Health Department (SEDES), Rubén Castillo, who reported that pneumonia, exacerbated by underlying illnesses, has claimed the lives of two children aged five years and five months in La Llajta.
The 5-year-and-two-month-old boy came to the pediatric hospital from the city of Kirakolo, where he had been hospitalized for nine days with complicated pneumonia exacerbated by underlying medical conditions.
Meanwhile, the five-month-old boy from the municipality of Cercado was hospitalized for eight days. “He has spent the last few days in the intensive care unit and unfortunately he has not been able to recover,” Castillo reported. He stressed that the underlying pathology is a reinforcer of any disease, which is why timely notification is crucial.
So far, the tertiary pediatric hospital has admitted seven patients, two of whom were diagnosed with influenza B pneumonia.
So far, 11 people have died from related pneumonia in Cochabamba.
According to the epidemiological report for the 30th epidemiological week from July 21 to 27, the number of cases increased by 14% compared with the previous week, with a total increase of 537 cases.
For this reason, Cochabamba is in a situation of “epidemiological alert”. Many cases of pneumonia are linked to cases of influenza.
