“The Ombudsman and the Environment and Planning Commissioner have called for a long-term solution to enforce the rules around outdoor tables and chairs,” the Ombudsman’s office said.

The Ombudsman said the action taken earlier this month was to ensure the square’s outdoor occupancy area did not exceed the approved 111 square metres.

On June 13, the Environment and Planning Commissioner wrote to the Police Commissioner requesting “immediate action with the assistance of the authorities responsible for regulating and enforcing the use of outdoor tables and chairs by catering establishments”.

The Ombudsman’s office said it has been actively addressing issues arising from poor enforcement of outdoor dining regulations.
