Some schools and businesses were closed today due to heavy rain and flooding.

GFC News editors spoke to John Yang, owner of the Dawn Restaurant in Paramaribo, who was forced to close his business today due to flooding.

Yang described the situation as dire: “We can’t leave our house at all, the children can’t go to school, and my business is closed.”

When asked if there was any visible damage to the restaurant, Yang confirmed that his refrigerator, fans and other low-lying items were damaged, for example.

Yang reported that he had to pump water every two to three hours. “I didn’t sleep all night,” he said. The entrepreneur said the responsibility for solving the flooding problem lies with the government.

The current situation highlights the urgent need for improved drainage systems and effective policies to prevent future flooding.

Many are calling on the government to take swift and effective action. At the same time, affected entrepreneurs and families want the support they need to get through this difficult time.
