Government explores partnership with Indonesian institutions in higher education « Government of Timor-Leste

The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Culture, José Honorio da Costa Pereira Jerónimo, paid an official visit to Jakarta, Indonesia, from July 19 to 20, 2024. The main purpose of the visit was to explore opportunities for cooperation in the field of higher education and to strengthen the capacity building of national human resources through partnerships with Indonesian higher education institutions. 452732762_811216171194352_885577053677698722_n

On July 19, Minister José Honorio participated as a speaker in the 55th anniversary seminar of the Faculty of Tourism (Pariwisata) Trisakti, held at the Artotel Mangkuluhur Hotel. The event was attended by more than 500 guests, including representatives of the Indonesian government, professors from various institutions, and members of the private sector. In his speech, the Minister stressed the importance of tourism as a strategic sector for sustainable economic development in Timor-Leste. He also announced plans to open a Faculty of Tourism and a Polytechnic of Tourism at the University of the National University of Timor-Leste (UNTL), with technical support from the Bandung Institute of Technology, scheduled to start in 2025. 452697729_811213924527910_7603081683450178466_n

On the same day, in addition to the seminar, the minister and his delegation also visited the ITEA College of Borobudur University, toured the college facilities, and discussed future cooperation in human resources training in professional fields in Timor-Leste.

On July 20, the Minister met with representatives of three higher education institutions in Jakarta: Nusantara Multimedia University, Mercu Buana University and Atma Jaya University from the Kompas Gramedia Group. During these meetings, possible partnerships were explored, including scholarships for Timorese students and short-term training programs for the Ministry’s technical staff. Mercu Buana University specifically expressed interest in providing Masters and PhD scholarships to Timorese students. 452665940_811216104527692_186098880050512457_n

At the end of the visit, the Minister met with Timorese students currently studying in Jakarta.
