Puerto Rico faces multiple challenges in responding to the climate crisis, with severe hurricanes in recent years, its colonial condition, economic debt, and government inaction and inefficiency leaving its people in a state of chronic physical and emotional vulnerability.
To explore Puerto Ricans’ views on the climate crisis and climate change, the organization Friends of Southeast Asia. Started this activity Rooted in the climate crisisa research project will analyze three components of the Puerto Rican population: cognitive (thinking), affective (feelings), and behavioral (behavior).
Similarly, Rooted in the Climate Crisis has three aims: the first is to make visible the emotional realities of people living in Puerto Rico as they face the impacts of the climate crisis and government inaction; the second is to build a measurement tool to determine how the people of Puerto Rico and their communities perceive the climate crisis; and third, to develop and promote climate crisis adaptation and mitigation policies based on the findings.
The Puerto Rico Crisis and Climate Change Perception Questionnaire can be completed digitally in approximately 20 minutes by accessing the form available through: www.crisisclimaticapr.com. Every participation is anonymous.
“In the face of the climate crisis, we need to address the emotional consequences it has on the people and communities we have worked with over the years. We want to make visible the emotional reality that Puerto Ricans face in the face of the climate crisis, with the aim of developing projects that prevent and address people’s emotional experiences,” commented Vanessa Uriarte, Co-Director of Amigxs del MAR.
To participate in the survey, people must be 21 years of age or older, have lived in Puerto Rico for the past seven years, be able to read in Spanish, and have access to a device with an internet connection. The survey will run until the end of September 2024. Final results will be released in summer 2025.

Amigxs del MAR is a non-profit organization founded in 1995 that recognizes the impact of the climate crisis on human emotions.
