URUMQI, March 30 (Xinhua) — Northwest China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region has introduced China’s first local regulation on curbing and eliminating extremism, which will take effect this Saturday.
The regulations define the main extremist behaviors, propose specific measures to prevent, contain and purify extremism, and clarify the responsibilities of government departments and the public.
According to the regulations, 15 behaviors are considered extremism, including interfering with others’ freedom of religious belief, forcing others to participate in religious activities, expelling believers of different religions, expanding the concept of “halal” to areas other than food, wearing or forcing others to wear burqas, marrying or divorcing through religious means rather than legal procedures, and depriving children of the right to receive national education.
Chen Tong, dean of the Law School of Xinjiang Normal University, said that the promulgation of the “Regulations” clarified the boundaries between legal and illegal religions and provided legal guarantees for protecting legal religions and cracking down on illegal religions.
