The Ni-Vanuatu community in Honiara celebrated Vanuatu’s 44th Independence Anniversary today at the National Hall.
This colourful and vibrant event brought together the people of Vanuatu, friends and supporters.
Vanuatu-Solomon Council (VanSol) Vice Chairman Rocky Tuku told SIBC News the event was held to enable young Ni-Vanuatu to remember their country’s history.
Tuku urged Vanuatu students to uphold the values of their elders.
“Continue to strive to live up to the values and lessons passed down by our elders. Customs, culture, church and government are the foundation of Vanuatu’s independence. Let these teachings guide the country forward 44 years after independence,” Mr Tuku said.
It is understood that Vanuatu was known as the New Hebrides before its independence and gained independence on July 30, 1980 under the leadership of former Prime Minister Walter Linis.
