Egyptian fencer Nada Hafez revealed she competed in the Paris Olympics on Monday while seven months pregnant.
The 26-year-old won her first match in the women’s individual sabre but was subsequently eliminated in the round of 16.
“It looked like there were only two competitors on the podium, but there were actually three! There was me, my competitor, and my little baby who hadn’t come into this world yet!” Hafeez said in a post on Instagram.
Hafez, who is from Cairo and is competing in her third Olympics, said her “heart was filled with pride” after competing on the piste while pregnant. She defeated Elizabeth Tartakovsky of the United States 15-13 at the Grand Palais in the French capital before losing 15-7 to Jeon Hae-young of South Korea.
She added: “My children and I have faced our fair share of challenges, both physically and emotionally.”
“The pregnancy process itself was tough but having to try to keep a balance in life and exercise was nothing short of strenuous but it was worth it.
“I am lucky to have earned the trust of my husband (Ibrahim Ihab) and my family to get to where I am today.” (BBC News)
