In western Suriname, a high-rise wooden house on the corner of Matapiran and Twatwaweg in Wageningen was completely destroyed by fire around midnight on Sunday.

The editors of Waterkant.Net discussed the matter with the Wageningen district commander, K. Barsati, who reported that when the Surinamese fire brigade arrived at the scene after receiving the report, the house was already on fire.

It involved a house measuring 9 x 14 metres. The fire brigade found an elderly man who lived at the address. An alert neighbour spotted the fire and woke the man up.

The house and its contents were completely consumed in flames.

The resident jumped from the balcony as the staircase was on fire when the fire broke out. He was injured and was taken alone to Mungra Medical Centre for treatment.

During the subsequent firefighting work, the fire brigade removed and secured three gas cylinders weighing 100 pounds each from the building. The house was not fireproofed. Wageningen police are investigating the cause of the fire, which is still unknown.
