Indonesian minister to pay final respects to late Vietnamese leader

JAKARTA (ANTARA) – Agriculture Minister Andy Amran Suleiman visited Vietnam on behalf of President Joko Widodo to pay his last respects to former Vietnamese President Nguyen Phu Trong, who passed away last week.

According to the statement received on Thursday, Suleiman expressed his condolences to Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in Hanoi. Indonesian Ambassador to Vietnam Danny Abdi accompanied Suleiman to the meeting.

Sulaiman said: “On behalf of the Government and people of the Republic of Indonesia, I express my deepest condolences to the Party, Government, people and family of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam on the passing of national leader Nguyen Phu Trong.”

Sulaiman said that Mr. Nguyen Cao Jian, who passed away on July 19 at the age of 80, made important contributions to promoting the development of relations between Indonesia and Vietnam and laid the foundation for strengthening the strategic partnership between the two countries.

The Minister affirmed that the late Communist leader and General Secretary had proved himself to be a great statesman and his leadership and contributions would go down in history.

Vietnamese President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) expressed condolences on Sunday (July 21) for the death of Nguyen Phu Trong through his social media accounts.

The President said that Indonesia and Vietnam have continuously strengthened their strategic partnership over the past decade since they established diplomatic relations in 1955.

Jokowi also stressed that Indonesia and Vietnam have made food resilience development one of their diplomatic priorities. As a result, the two countries have promoted investment and cooperation in the agriculture and fisheries sectors.
