World leaders praised the hours-long ceremony on the River Seine, but comments elsewhere were more critical.
The opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics took place on the Seine River in Paris and featured a mechanical horse, Lady Gaga and Marie Antoinette.
Television viewers watched a spectacular show in which the Seine was transformed into a giant stage and performances took place on bridges and rooftops. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen posted on X that the event was a celebration of “global cooperation, solidarity, fairness and athletic perseverance”.
mixed reviews
Reviews of the ceremony elsewhere were less enthusiastic, with multiple social media users calling it “weird” and criticising the decision to hold it on the Seine rather than in a traditional stadium.
In a review of the ceremony, British newspaper The Guardian called it “not very smooth”, noting that rain continued to fall during several performances, distracting the audience.
The American newspaper The New York Times summed up the performance with the headline “Opening Ceremony a Missed Opportunity”.
In France, the French daily world Show director Thomas Jolly is said to have presented “an immersive show that transforms the capital into a giant stage”.
