As flu cases climb to unprecedented levels, health officials are urging the public to follow safety guidelines during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Consultant Paediatrician Dr Lakkumar Fernando emphasised the urgency of the situation, especially for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly and the immunocompromised.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Dr Fernando stressed the importance of the public adhering to safety guidelines which are crucial during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Children and the elderly should wear masks, practice good hand hygiene and maintain physical distance, especially on public transport and in social gatherings,” he said.

“Schools and nurseries have been identified as major hotspots of the outbreak. Parents are therefore urged to closely monitor their children’s health and not send them to schools or nurseries if they show any symptoms,” added Dr Fernando.

Symptoms of the current flu outbreak include fever, chills, headache, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, nausea, fatigue, loss of appetite and sore throat.

Meanwhile, Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) media spokesperson Dr Chamil Wijesinghe confirmed the sharp increase in influenza cases.

He also noted a slight increase in confirmed cases of COVID-19, several of which have resulted in death.

Most of the victims were not vaccinated. However, some deaths could not be directly attributed to COVID-19 despite positive PCR tests.

He also stressed that there is no need for people to panic as the reporting rate of COVID cases is not alarming.
