Convicted Camorra fugitive Francesco Lapis has been arrested in Barcelona, Spain’s National Police has announced.
Spanish police said Lapis was a known member of the Camorra criminal organization in Rome and had been on Italy’s list of most dangerous fugitives.
The 50-year-old went on the run in 2019 after being convicted and sentenced to prison in Rome for a large-scale trafficking operation of cocaine and cannabis between Spain and Italy.
Italian police sought assistance from Spanish police to track him down after Lapis hid out in Barcelona, Spain, where he continued his business activities and frequently traveled to Turkey, Bulgaria and other countries.
His whereabouts were reportedly revealed through social media posts and stories on Instagram and TikTok published by people close to him. This information allowed Italian authorities to locate the whereabouts of two of his accomplices, who then shared the information they obtained with their colleagues in the Spanish National Police’s UDYCO Fugitive Location Unit.
Police set up a surveillance operation and when Lapis’s associates flew to Barcelona from France, officers began to follow them shortly after their plane landed at Barcelona airport.
Lapis’s accomplices left the airport and took a taxi, which police said was an attempt to evade surveillance.
However, they were unsuccessful and police continued to track them to the outskirts of Barcelona, where they encountered Lapis himself on a road. That’s when police arrived on the scene and arrested him on a European arrest warrant issued by Italy. He currently remains in custody awaiting extradition back to Italy.
