“Ismael el Mayo Zambada,” one of the least well-known Mexican drug lords, was eventually captured by the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), a fact that Mexican society itself never expected to happen.
The historical leader and founder of the Sinaloa drug cartel, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, was detained on July 25 at a private airport in El Paso, Texas, USA, under bizarre circumstances due to the ease with which criminals commit crimes by Drug Enforcement Administration forces.
US media said Zambada was “handed over” by Joaquin Guzman Lopez, the son of “Shorty”, who was also arrested in the same operation.
There are two tendencies in this version: the first is a betrayal within the Sinaloa Cartel, the second is to benefit another son of Chapo Guzmán.
The Univisión Network has collected information from media outlets such as The Wall Street Journal, CNN and The New York Times, in which they guarantee that Ismael Zambada was betrayed by a senior member of the cartel in order to board the plane on which he was transferred to the United States without his knowledge.
“The explanation he received was that he was going to check out a secret airport in Mexico. However, the flight was headed to the border city of El Paso, already in the United States, where FBI agents were waiting for him.”

The second version could be consistent with the fact that one of Chapo’s sons was also on the plane that landed in El Paso, claiming that he was seeking benefits for his brother who was detained in 2023.
Ovidio Guzmán, also known as “El Ratón,” was first arrested in 2019, sparking an armed confrontation known as “El Culiacanazo,” an offensive by members of the Sinaloa drug cartel to try to free Chapo’s son.
It was the same Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador who ordered the release of the drug traffickers to avoid the massacre in Culiacán.
Finally, on January 5, 2023, “El Ratón” was captured and subsequently extradited to the United States to stand trial.
According to The New York Times, Joaquín Guzmán López worked with U.S. authorities to help his brother Ovidio by delivering “El Mayo Zambada.”
The media questioned whether Zambada’s surrender was successful because it was reported that Ovidio Guzman no longer appeared in the registry of the US Federal Bureau of Prisons and his profile was “released.”
Although neither the Mexican nor the American governments have investigated Ovidio’s condition in depth, US authorities have ensured that “El Chapo’s” son remains in their custody.
The Sinaloa drug cartel is one of Mexico’s major criminal groups with roots around the world. It is led by father and son El Mayo Zambada and Joaquin El Chapo Guzman and has been embroiled in internal conflicts over power disputes for years.
After Zambada’s arrest, everything seemed to indicate that absolute control of the criminal organization would fall into the hands of “Los Chapitos”, however, the same Mexican media feared that other figures allied with “El Mayo” could intervene and leave bloodshed on the streets.
