The Government, through the Secretariat of State for Equality and Social Communication, in partnership with the Media Development Centre Foundation and UN Women, held a ceremony to hand over the materials to the Press Council on 25 July 2024. The materials, which include a manual on gender-sensitive reporting, guidelines and monitoring tools, are intended to help journalists and media professionals produce news that promotes an inclusive and respectful approach to gender issues.
During the ceremony, Secretary of State for Equality Elvina Sousa Carvalho stressed the importance of the media in changing mindsets and promoting gender equality. “The media and journalists play an important role in building a more equitable society. Through gender-sensitive reporting, we can break down stereotypes and foster a culture of respect and inclusion,” he said.
Secretary of State for Social Communications Expedito Dias Ximenes stressed the need for an ethical and responsible approach to journalism. “Journalists have a responsibility to reflect the diversity of society in their reporting. Promoting gender equality in the media is essential to ensure that all voices are heard and respected,” he stressed.
The Press Council is committed to using the materials to improve the skills of media professionals, said its president, Otelio Ote. “Providing journalists with the right tools and guidance will help produce more informed and sensitive news reporting and promote accountability and high ethical standards in journalism,” he said.
Nuntana Tangwinit, Programme Specialist at the United Nations Women’s Equality Federation, highlighted the impact of social media in shaping social attitudes and preventing gender-based violence. “Gender-sensitive journalism is essential to combat discrimination and promote a more equitable society,” said Nuntana Tangwinit, who was also proud to “support this initiative to strengthen the capacity of Timor-Leste’s media.”
The event was attended by journalists from various media, including representatives of social communication students from the National University of Timor-Leste (UNTL) and the University of Timor-Leste (UNITAL).
This action falls within the scope of the National Action Plan on Gender-Based Violence 2022-2032 (PAN-VBJ), particularly in its prevention pillar.
