The Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation (SIBC) has signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Solomon Power to collaborate on a solar farm project.
The signing ceremony was held today at the Prime Minister’s Office and was attended by the Prime Minister, His Excellency Jeremiah Manele, Deputy Prime Minister, His Excellency Bradley Tovosia, and members of both boards.
The project aims to build a 5MW solar farm at the SIBC transmission station in East Honiara, allowing the organisation to sell renewable energy to Solomon Power.
William Parairato, chairman of the board of Solomon Power, said at the signing ceremony that the memorandum of understanding represents the shared interests of Solomon Power, the government and the people in renewable energy.
“Our shared desire to find alternative renewable energy sources brought us together to ensure we had a consensus to move forward with this project for our people,” he stressed.
Setting up the solar farm will allow the national broadcaster to generate revenue through non-traditional means.
Meanwhile, David Quan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Solomon Power, also expressed his support for this cause.
“We look forward to further cooperation and any support and communication we can provide, as we have a professional team of engineers with many years of experience in the solar energy field,” he said.
He added that the success of the project will contribute to Solomon Power’s ongoing efforts to enhance renewable energy and reduce electricity prices in the country.
At the same time, Prime Minister Manele expressed appreciation for the efforts made by the two parties to implement national policies.
“That’s how state-owned enterprises and statutory bodies should function… Therefore, this proposed project is a step in the right direction for SIBC and SIEA to serve the people,” Manele explained.
He also assured that discussions were ongoing with development partners to secure financial support.
According to SIBC News, the memorandum of understanding between the two parties will be valid for six months from the date of signing.
