Two people died and more than 20 people were infected in a diphtheria outbreak in Somalia’s Central Shabelle region

MOGADISHU (HOL) — An outbreak of diphtheria in Somalia’s Central Sheberaha region has killed two people and infected more than 20 others, according to the country’s deputy health minister.

Deputy Minister Mohammad Hassan Mohammad confirmed the death and infection toll and stressed the severe symptoms of the disease. “Symptoms of diphtheria include closing of the throat, difficulty swallowing, fever and severe weakness that makes it impossible to move,” he said.

The Ministry of Health is taking active measures to prevent the spread of the disease, which has been reported in Shebela Hadhesek. The Deputy Minister stressed the contagious nature of diphtheria and urged the Somali public to take necessary precautions.

Efforts to contain the outbreak are being stepped up and health officials are closely monitoring the situation. Public awareness campaigns are underway to educate the community on the symptoms and prevention measures of diphtheria.
