Paris France:
Ian Kelly, Chef de Mission for Jamaica at the 2024 Paris Olympics, promised that the world would be enchanted by the island’s charm during today’s opening ceremony.
The Olympic Games officially opened today, beginning at 12:30 pm Jamaica time, with television viewers around the world witnessing the historic first-ever Olympic Opening Ceremony to be held on the River Seine.
Kelly said that through this unique ceremony, Jamaica’s vibrant culture will be showcased through the athletes and he believes that the Jamaican brand will be well represented.
“As a brand, we are known for our talent and passion. I know that based on our jersey designs and the mentality of our players, we will showcase our brand in a way that Jamaicans will be proud of,” Kelly told The Gleaners.
More than 10,000 athletes will take to the ferry from the Pont d’Austerlitz, passing iconic landmarks such as Notre Dame and the Louvre, as well as venues such as the Place des Invalides (archery and road cycling) and the Grand Palais (fencing, taekwondo).
Boats from more than 200 countries will be on display in nearly 100 vessels. Larger nations will have their own boats, while others will share vessels.
Athletes will march along a six-kilometre stretch of the Seine to the Trocadero Gardens opposite the Eiffel Tower, where the Olympic flame will be lit.
Two-time world championships triple jump silver medalist Shanieka Ricketts and swimmer Josh Kirlew will serve as Jamaica’s flag bearers at the Games, leading the country’s 60-plus delegation.
As for the performances expected during the celebration, it is rumored that multiple Grammy Award-winning singer Celine Dion and Lady Gaga will perform a song together during the celebration.
