The National Electoral Agency (ANE) said that significant progress has been made in the preparations for the local elections scheduled for October next year. This position was expressed on Wednesday, 24 July, during MINUSCA’s weekly press conference, dedicated to the current electoral process.
Despite the reluctance of parts of the country’s political class, especially the democratic opposition, to hold municipal elections in the Central African Republic in time for next October, the National Electoral Institute (ANE) talks about the progress being made.

“The electoral maps have been updated to accommodate the new administrative configuration, while also providing solutions to the technical issues we experienced following the 2020-2021 general elections. ANE is working hard to ensure that local elections take place on time.” assured Théophile Momokoama, ANE General Rapporteur.
While the Central African Republic’s body responsible for organizing elections has made progress, it is concerned about article 18 of the Electoral Code, which requires a review of electoral lists one year before any election.

Without updating this, we cannot hold these elections. This is very important for the participation of those who have to vote in this vote. For its part, MINUSCA reiterated its commitment to the ongoing electoral process as a way for the UN to guarantee transparency and democracy in the country.
