Mobile communication networks have evolved from the initial 2G to the current 5G. Everyone knows that the G here stands for Generation, representing the generation of mobile communication networks. The latest standard is 5.5G (also known as 5G-Advanced). However, as far as fixed-line broadband is concerned, Hong Kong has never had a unified standard, so the experience provided by different Internet service providers varies. With technological breakthroughs, fixed-line broadband has established some new benchmarks.European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI)Responsible for setting global information technology and communications technology (ICT) standards. The association sets fixed-line broadband standardsF5G-Aand has also begun to be used in Hong Kong.

F5G-A stands for Fifth Generation Fixed Network-Advanced, which is the latest development of fixed broadband technology and is equivalent to 5.5G in mobile communication networks. F5G-A is a unified fixed broadband standard, ensuring that future customers will be able to experience extremely fast speeds.

To obtain F5G-A standard certification, six major requirements must be met, especially in terms of network support for 50G PON passive optical network technology (supporting up to 50G fiber broadband) and WiFi 7’s enhanced fixed broadband (eFBB), guaranteed reliable experience (GRE) and full fiber connection (FFC). In addition, F5G-A introduces green agile all-optical network (GAO), real-time resilient connection (RRL) and optical sensing and visualization (OSV), which enable the network to better serve various industrial and commercial needs, such as smart cities and industrial automation.

One of the major innovations of F5G-A is that it can support extremely high data transmission rates, reaching tens of Gbps per second, which provides a solid foundation for 8K video streaming, big data processing and cloud computing. For home users, with higher network speeds, they can enjoy a better Internet experience; enterprises can use F5G-A for remote work, cloud services and machine learning applications, greatly improving productivity and operational efficiency.

F5G-A places special emphasis on network reliability and security, and guarantees reliable experience (GRE) to ensure the continuity and protection of network services, and can maintain stable operation in different application scenarios. The full fiber connection capability allows fiber to connect to more different devices, further promoting the popularity and accessibility of fiber network services.

F5G-A is not only a symbol of technological progress, but also a clear indication of the future development direction of fixed-line broadband. From now on, F5G-A will be synonymous with the most advanced fixed-line broadband network. Currently, there is an Internet service provider in Hong Kong that fully meets the six requirements of the F5G-A standard set by ETSI. In addition to providing the latest 50G PON passive optical network technology and supporting up to 50G optical fiber broadband, this Internet service provider also supports FTTx (Fiber To The x, that is, fiber to a certain place, such as fiber into the house, and even fiber into the room), etc., and cooperates with WiFi 7 to provide the best Internet experience.

In the past, the quality of fixed-line broadband networks varied greatly due to the lack of a unified standard. However, with the introduction of the F5G-A standard developed by ETSI, I hope that when people see the term F5G-A in the future, it will mean a guarantee of an extremely high-speed and smooth fixed-line broadband experience.
