Jamaicans whose homes were damaged or destroyed during Hurricane Beryl should begin receiving emergency grants within the next four weeks.
“We intend to complete the assessment within the next week. We intend to complete the data entry within the next two weeks and we intend to start distributing benefits within the next four weeks,” said Labor and Social Security Secretary Pearnel Charles Jr.
He spoke at a post-Cabinet press conference at Jamaica House on Wednesday (July 24).
The government has allocated $1 billion to help disaster victims recover and rebuild.
Those whose homes were destroyed will receive up to $400,000; those whose homes were severely damaged will receive up to $150,000; and those whose homes were slightly damaged will receive up to $50,000.
The minister said that 95% of the assessment work has been completed and as of July 22, 8,397 houses have been assessed.
Of these, 453 were destroyed; 3,221 were seriously damaged; and 4,723 were slightly damaged.
The Minister said the Jamaica Household Disaster Impact and Needs Assessment Tool is the primary mechanism for assessing the needs and conditions of households following a disaster to determine the response to be provided.
Meanwhile, he thanked private sector stakeholders for their role in the restoration efforts and urged them to express their support to the diocesan offices of the ministry.
“Just tell them what you’re doing and where you’re doing it so we can take that into account as we sort out all the rescue and recovery efforts across the island,” he said.
