Norms in public life are essential for the health of a democracy. Decision-making security, political stability and public confidence all depend on them. If they are not respected, the downward spiral in our country will deepen. More and more Surinamese voters are calling for better DNA members and, most importantly, better leadership for our country. A President, Vice President and Ministers with the right knowledge, character and people-oriented spirit to lead our country for the next 20-30 years. Leaders with questionable pasts in our Supreme Council of State and national leadership must finally become a thing of the past.

There is no prospect of a legislative instrument being developed for this purpose, as most of the political parties in the DNA currently have no intention of introducing such legislation. The “reasons” for this are easy to guess.

The great thing about democracy is that it provides voters with every opportunity to correct what the current DNA members have missed. This is done by using their voices.

Every political party and candidate must meet the requirements set by voters to get that vote. These requirements include moral standards, which are the foundation of a healthy democracy. Sadly, this undeniable condition has been neglected within the current political center due to the prevalence of populism and self-interest. There is only a prospect of progress if we as a society choose integrity, professionalism and accountability and make them the core of the next government. We must maintain decency and standards in public life. No single law or set of rules or values can cover every aspect of behavior.

Our citizens desperately need a standard guide to guide their choices. The political parties and governments currently represented in the DNA will not expect this.

Norms of public life help preserve the health of democratic institutions and maintain public confidence in them. They help prevent politicians and public servants from being guided by external interests in their decision-making and help create a political culture that fosters open and constructive debate. In doing so, they contribute to a fair, inclusive, stable, and effective political system.

The standard of public life is also important to our country’s economic prosperity and international reputation. A reputation for stable governance – including strong decision-making, the absence of political corruption, and a reliable and smoothly functioning political system – is an important factor in encouraging investment.

We must set high standards and requirements for everyone who (wants to) hold public office. Then consider:
Selflessness, integrity, objectivity, responsibility, openness, honesty and leadership. In addition to this, we also emphasize respect for others as an aspect of leadership.

– Some standards are legal issues. For example, the Political Organization Campaign Financing Act. This is a law that DA’91 has called for many times. This law contains rules for accepting donations or spending on campaigns, as well as other politically related laws, such as anti-bribery laws.

– It is important that we have a code of conduct for all our institutions.

– Financial interest disclosure rules are extremely important. And rules prohibiting politicians from using parliamentary or government facilities or services for matters that are not in the national interest.

Voters must bring values into politics

Since the parties represented by the current government and the DNA are unwilling to legislate and rule, it is up to the citizens to implement this. This means choosing those parties and individuals, such as DA’91, in whom you have tasted and experienced the willingness to provide substance for these necessary basic conditions.

One of the most important litmus tests is the use of transparent profiles to fill positions. DA’91 has launched the profiles of DNA candidates for October 2023, and the party has recently submitted profiles for the president or vice president. Our voters have the final chance to choose a better Suriname. Therefore, the party provides all citizens with the necessary decision criteria when they vote. A good measuring stick is essential.

We all want a better Suriname. Towards a new republic. Using profiles and standards is the only solution. The choice of the breakthrough is up to you, all of us. It’s your choice, your vote. What do you choose?

Suriname deserves better!
