The Bank of Jamaica said the total value of banknotes issued to the public in 2023 increased by 34.6%.
The central bank said in its annual report that the value of banknotes issued was 505.1 billion Jamaican dollars.
The Bank of Japan said this reflected the country’s demand for its newly launched polymer banknotes.
Of all banknotes issued last year, $303.2 billion, or 60%, were polymer notes.
The total value of issued coins increased by 8% compared to 2022, reaching $1.6 billion.
1.5 billion coins will be issued in 2022.
The country’s central bank digital currency, JAM-DEX, issued only $200 million in 2023.
This is related to the government’s JAM-DEX incentive program, which provides funds to citizens who register digital wallets.
