President Museveni praised the security agencies that foiled the attack and Ugandans who refused to join the recent anti-corruption march to parliament.
He said the planned march was hijacked by thugs who were planning chaos with funding from foreign agents.
He did not confirm his claims but said intelligence-based evidence would be released in court showdowns with those arrested so far.
Gen. Museveni has said he is determined to be at the forefront of the fight against corruption and has tasked his blue-eyed lady, Col. Edith Nakalema, to organise a surreal anti-corruption march to Kololo, which he will attend in due course.
He wants to show Ugandans how to do it.
Read on for his full statement:
Fellow Ugandans, especially those of Ugandan descent.
Hello everyone. I want to congratulate the armed forces, security forces and the Wanainge people who thwarted or did not participate in the undesirable demonstration that was scheduled for Tuesday.
There are two bad factors in that demonstration. The first factor is the money from foreign countries which have been interfering in the internal affairs of Africa for the past 600 years – slave trade, colonialism, neo-colonialism, genocide, economic exploitation, etc. All participants should know that Uganda is not a neo-colony where these shallow plots can be carried out.
The second point is that some of the organizers and participants of the demonstrations were planning extremely bad activities against the Ugandan people. These extremely bad activities will be exposed in court when those arrested are tried. Some of the participants may not have known about the foreign funding and bad activities being planned. Therefore, they should have listened to the advice of the police and not to continue the demonstrations. But they ignored the advice of the police.
Otherwise, if this is a patriotic, anti-corruption, peaceful demonstration with police cooperation, I will be the first to participate.
In fact, in 2019, Nakalema organized us and we started from the city square, crossed Kampala Road, went to Jinja Road and finally reached Kololo. There were huge crowds of people, including bishops, soldiers, Wanaingchi people, etc. I thought Nakalema had set the time for Sunday because there were no vehicles or pedestrians on the road. Nakalema now tells me that it was Wednesday, December 4, 2019, but they cooperated with the police to block the traffic for a few hours.
Besides, that part of Kampala is sparsely populated except during the day. Nakalema could coordinate with the real anti-corruption fighters for similar efforts, especially on Sundays. It is not right for Nakalema to use the working day. In particular, the densely populated suburbs of our city – Kawempe, Bwaise, etc., must not be used for demonstrations because they destroy the little wealth that our people have worked so hard to accumulate. The Kololo ceremony site is being repaired. Once the repairs are completed, Nakalema should organize us. I will go.
However, those who are being funded by foreigners should stop doing so and report those who are funding them to the Minister of Morality. We are not arresting them. In any case, we know a lot about what these groups are doing. Our interest is to keep Uganda safe from the machinations of the imperialists and their agents.
Yet the planners of Tuesday’s demonstrations were not concerned with these issues. I politely advised them in my speech to The Nation a few days ago. Apparently, they thought my advice was irrelevant. Ugandans are urged to steer clear of these offenders. The evidence in court will shock many. As I said above, the planners of these demonstrations wanted to do very bad things. I suspect that the police charges of “idleness and disorderly conduct” were based on officers deployed without all the information. This was a high-quality, intelligence-led operation. I had most of the information.
Next week I will be broadcasting to discuss this further. Thank God there was no bloodshed on Tuesday. The fight against corruption is in my hands. I just need the evidence and then I will act.
Accountants are the guardians of government funds, procurement and people (jobs, benefits).
They let us down, and they let themselves down. I am leading this little war now. We are fighting a bigger war. And we will win this war, too.
