Donegal County Council will launch a public consultation on speed limits from 1 August on the Road Traffic (Special Speed Limits) (County Donegal) (Amendment) Bill 2024, coinciding with the Road Traffic Bill 2024 and plans for a phased reduction in default speed limits across Ireland.
- Stage 1 – Rural local roads speed limit reduced to 60 km/h unless otherwise provided for in the 2024 Bylaw Amendment Bill (currently under public consultation)
- Phase 2 – Reducing speed limits in cities and on national roads (consultation in 2025)
The public is welcome to provide input on the 2024 Bylaw Amendment Bill, which aims to provide more appropriate speed limits for rural local roads. The 2024 Bylaw Amendment Bill also covers certain state highway locations and public roads within designated residential areas.
Bryan Cannon, director of roads and traffic services at Donegal County Council, said: “This consultation process will help the public understand the proposed changes to default speed limits, which will be phased in across the country next year. “It is important that all road users are aware of the speed limit changes proposed for Donegal in this bylaw amendment and use this opportunity to make comments and have their say.”
The draft Speed Limits Amendment Bill 2024 and its supporting information will be available online at http://consult.donegal.ie The event will be held during normal business hours at the following council offices for 30 days from 1 August:English Stone 2024:
