Earlier last year, NRG Radio Uganda, a new face in Ugandan radio, launched the NRGETIC MVP campaign. The initiative was designed to discover talented individuals to become NRG’s next King or Queen of Radio, Social Media Manager, Content Creator and in-house DJ. Other winners included DJ Beats and Robin Kist, and social media gurus Deliverance Kutosi and Drek Mugume.

As the campaign heats up this year, the competition is getting fiercer. From NRGETIC MVP to BEAST MVPThey will share their experiences from past competitions, their journey to joining NRG Radio, and offer advice to this year’s contestants. Big boy Shaq.

Ishaque currently hosts #NRGBreakfastShowUG on NRG Radio, alongside NRG MVP Radio Queen Eka and renowned singer Prim Asiimwe. The show, which also features DJ Beats’ amazing radio mixes, airs live every Monday to Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. “Whether you’re at work, at school, or getting ready for school, feel free to tune in,” said Ishaque.

Big Boy Shaque is not only a radio host, he is also a multimedia journalist, voiceover artist and coach, poet and English tutor. He started his career in 2016 as a MC for high school events while also participating in debates and writing poetry. He worked as a freelancer in the art of voiceover and became the voiceover artist for a famous MTN data pack commercial. In 2020, he joined the Media Challenge Initiative and worked on its online MCI radio, which ignited his passion for broadcasting. It was there that he learned about the #NRGeticMVPs competition and became the winner.

Looking back on his experience, Ishaq recalled, “I was hesitant to audition for the 2023 NRGetic MVP, suspecting it might be another scam in Kampala. I submitted my video at the last minute, just to give it a try, and it turned out to be the best decision I made this year. It changed my career.”

He added that when he first walked into NRG Radio, he knew he had to give it his all. “The audition was challenging, with a lot of talented and well-known contestants. But by staying true to myself, I managed to win the title of King of Radio.” This victory later became his biggest achievement in 2023.

Why did Ishaque choose NRG? The gorgeous host explains that working at NRG Radio felt like a perfect fit for him and exceeded all his expectations. He says the team at NRG is full of energy and respect for each other. “It’s been a privilege working with Prim Asiimwe, who has been in the industry for a while. I learn so much from her every day. My MVP winners Eka and DJ Beats are like family.”

As for the show itself, being a part of NRG Breakfast Club has been an unforgettable experience for Ishaque. He loves “the way we connect with our listeners every morning, entertaining and engaging with them as they start their day. It’s great to be a part of their routine and bring energy and joy to their mornings.”

For those applying for the BEAST MVP Challenge, Ishaque advises to be genuine and show your personality. “Remember, your only real competition is yourself. Show your best self every time and you’ll have a great chance of winning.”
