The National Meteorological and Hydrological Centre (NMC) has issued a notice to the people of Lonak that the sea level will drop.
Bhutan has 17 dangerous glaciers, the most dangerous of which are prone to collapse, and the decision was taken because of the high risk of collapse.
According to experts, the glacier is now at a dangerous level of collapse.
The National Meteorological and Hydrological Centre (NOC) announced strategies to reduce water levels and glaciers, for example by taking new measures in the highlands to drain meltwater directly into waterways, such as using plastic jugs to drain petrol from cars.
“The lake is expanding rapidly,” said Kalma, head of the glacier service. The cause of the flood is mainly due to the melting of ice caused by the current warming climate. If the reservoir is destroyed, all the water will flow into Lake Rabfullen, and the glacier will become a lake, “posing a huge threat to the country.”
The glacier is covered with ice, and a small amount of ice in the sea stands above the sea, separating it from Lake Rabphreng.
In 2008, the ice cover in the center of the lake was 45 meters wide, but since 2019, the width has dropped to 33 meters.
The study showed that if the ice in the middle disappeared, the ice in Rubber Lake would collapse immediately, and the tidal volume of the two lakes combined would reach 53 million cubic meters of water.
On October 30 last year, the lake was expected to rise, but the next day the water level dropped again.
Similarly, in June 2019, the water level of the Second Glacier was threatened, and the National Meteorological and Hydrological Center (NMC) analyzed that the rise in sea levels was mainly caused by climate change.
In 2019, the Tangzang Meteorological Bureau predicts that April, May and Pa will have the highest temperatures in history, and the temperatures in September and October will also rise.
The glacier is currently 4.33 kilometers wide, 4.33 kilometers high, covers an area of 4.33 square kilometers, and has an altitude of 1.3 meters.
The first project to lower the water level of the Thothormi glacier was implemented in 2009, with a reduction of 300 water levels. The project lowered the glacier level by 5 meters. Since 1996, it has become easier to lower the water level of the Rabphreng Lake. Work continued until 1998;
During the first phase of work, the project did not use any machinery, but at the time the Tolmi Glacier was mostly covered with ice.
Two communities in Lungnak, Thangzang and Tenspyi Chiwogs, have settled under Thothormi Lake. The two communities have been evacuated to safer locations in Damthangka, Sbalza, Sgangjug and Dungbisteng and have been relocated to the country.
