The Australian High Commissioner to the Solomon Islands, the Honourable Rod Hilton, along with the North West Guadalcanal MP Francis Sader, travelled to the village of Bubumala to officially launch the Bubumala Community Water Project, funded by Australia and built by Solomon Islanders.
The Bubumala community used a grant of more than SWL$177,000 from the Solomon Islands-Australia Community Partnership to purchase building materials to install a solar water pump and three 10,000 litre water tanks, with the materials sourced directly from Solomon Islands businesses.
Australia’s High Commissioner to the Solomon Islands, the Honourable Rod Hilton, said thanks to the grant, Bubumala village now has safe drinking water for its community of more than 300 people.
“Australia is committed to its partnership with the Solomon Islands. We share an ocean, a region and a future. We are proud to support communities across the Solomon Islands with small community infrastructure projects, such as this one at Bubumara, northwest of Guadalcanal. We are also proud to be able to directly purchase hardware materials for Solomon Islands businesses through these grants,” said High Commissioner Hilton.
The Solomon Islands-Australia Community Partnership is a small grants program that supports community-led projects aimed at improving living standards.
These community projects are located throughout the Solomon Islands and Australia looks forward to continuing to work with communities across the Happy Islands.
