Minister of Labour and External Employment Manusha Nanayakkara said those who said we are not holding elections and are afraid of elections came, disappeared and broke like a tide. All those who do not want the country to fall again will work together in Galle.
He attended the Sri Lanka Jayagamu Programme in Galle today (24th) and said that when he came to Galle two years ago, there was no policy, only one approach and the whole country was united behind this approach.
The minister also said that there will be a wave of unity among everyone and no longer division.
“Two years ago I said I have a practice, not a policy. Today the whole country is united behind this practice. Today political parties are no longer valid. Color, race and religion are no longer valid. They should be valid. But as a solution for the country, people should unite today. This has already begun.”
Speaking at the Manara Stadium in Gallesa, the Minister further stated:
“I am sending dollars that supposedly should not be sent to this country for the sake of the people and paying tribute to the migrant workers in my hometown of Galle. Without your nation-building strength, President Ranil Wickremesinghe could not have rebuilt the country in two years. Galle’s history stretches from the Great Parakumba period to modern history. Even foreigners should not fail to visit Galle. We believe that in the Old Testament, Tarshesh was the port of Galle and Galle was such an ancient trading center.
Galle Fort is a museum without a roof. Galle is associated with Ramayana and Rumasara. Galle is the region that gave birth to a Prime Minister. He was our Dahanayak. There have been many historical writers here from Senarat Paranavitana to Champ. CWW Kannangara who was born in Landumbe provided free education to the entire country. People who shout lies in colleges today do not know this. Today, college students are given Mahapola scholarships and study for free with the help of Mr. Lalith Athulathmudali. Today, the President provides scholarships to school children because he knows the value of free education.
Two years ago I came here and said I have no policies, only practices. Today, the whole country has united to find solutions. Today’s policies are not effective. Colour, caste and religion are not effective. They should be effective. But today, people have started to unite to find solutions for the country. Not only are we happy to have come out of this abyss after two years, but we are also proud as a team. The people of Galle said then that this could not be achieved.
Two years ago, I said on this platform that I was really going to get rid of the workers. If we didn’t exist, we meant to end the system of being taken to the streets every May Day in dirty clothes and create a place where workers can excel, create a place fit for the modern world of work. At that time, we had already drawn up the necessary plans and created the background to replace the labor law with a new employment guarantee law and submit it to Parliament.
The word “Labor” has been removed and a new ministry has been created, the Ministry of Employment. There is no longer a Ministry of Labour, but a Ministry of Employment and Security. In order to make our workers respectable, sell their labour at a fair price and not sell it cheaply, and improve their social welfare, we have developed this program and are implementing it district by district. The 23rd phase of the program is underway in Galle today. Also, those who went abroad as unskilled workers, the Foreign Employment Bureau sent most of the trained workers to train them, and after two years, they were completely transformed and were able to be successfully employed as workers.
We decided to train 100,000 entrepreneurs to reward and honor the workers who provided the reconstruction funds of dollars to this declining country through the banking system. We cannot always send workers abroad to make up our trade. We cannot expect them to bring us money. Let them go if they want. There should be industry at home.
*Currently, there are 88 industries in our country that pay EPF and ETF. It is a shameful situation. That is why we brought in 5,000 entrepreneurs from Galle, Mattala and Hambantota. Starting from Rs. 50,000, we gave grants of Rs. 100,000, 250,000 and improved their lives and created 100,000 entrepreneurs in the country, just like South Korea developed the declining countries. They approached the IMF and started rebuilding the economy. Developing this country through thousands of entrepreneurs joining hands with other businessmen to make it a developed country is not a dream but a reality.
We will also bring all these people together in a journey where everyone comes together, called “Jayagamu Sri Lanka”. So we provide support to give you the strength to start a business from Sri Lanka so that you don’t have to keep going abroad.
They made demands that the government could not meet, struck, shouted, took people to the streets, and finally died in the railway strike, playing politics. We are different in this. Those who try to survive the crisis cannot survive the crisis. We have shown that our way is to provide solutions to the crisis. Not politics divided by partisan colors, but solutions that the country needs.
We have shown in two years that unity is the answer. So not only have we built this country in two years, but we will not participate in politics today or tomorrow. We remind you that we are only in the business of building the country.
Some say we will not hold elections, we are afraid of the waves that are being raised these days. We say those waves are like the sea. Wrinkles come, wrinkles go and wrinkles break again. Today, we are raising a new wave in Galle. This wave will be built as a nation and we join hands with all of you so that this nation will not fall again. It has no colour, no party, no caste, no religion. All government officials and politicians come together and start a national movement. Jayagamu Sri Lanka is not a dream. This Jayagamu Sri Lanka is not a dream but a reality if all parties put aside race and caste and start with themselves. Let us raise this wave from Galle today,” the Minister said.
The event was attended by Minister of State for Promotion of Foreign Employment Jagath Pushpa Kumara, Co-Chairman of Galle District Coordination Committee, Galle District MP Sampath Athukorala, Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Foreign Employment Ananda Vimalaweera, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Foreign Employment Mangala Karunathilaka, Mudita Padmajay, Lal Samarasekera, Secretary of Galle District W. it.
