Permanent Secretary Ronald Mizzi has resigned following his indictment in the Vitals hospital scandal on Wednesday.
Hours after Mizzi was charged, the Office of the Chief Permanent Secretary issued a statement announcing the change in position following Mizzi’s resignation as Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Economy.
“Mr. Mizzi reiterates in his letter that he is confident the court will find facts that warrant his pardon, but believes that, at this time, this is the most personal option and the one that is most reasonable and respectful of public administration.”
It was also announced that Nancy Caruana, currently permanent secretary of the Ministry of Inclusion, will take over Mizzi’s position.
Caruana will be replaced by Permanent Secretary Mark Musu, who will perform this role in addition to his role as Permanent Secretary for Social Policy.
Caruana served as permanent secretary of the ministry from 2014 to 2022.
