University of the West Indies mourns the death of Sir Neville Nicholls

University of the West Indies, Jamaica Regional Headquarters. Tuesday, July 23, 2024. The Caribbean has lost another intellectual giant. The University of the West Indies (UWI) has paid tribute to Sir Neville Nicholls, describing him as a quintessential Caribbean man who served his native Barbados and the Caribbean in many roles, including as Chairman of the Campus Council of the UWI Cave Hill Campus from 1995 to 2009, and as President of the Caribbean Development Bank.

In all his endeavors, the hallmark of excellence and doing the right thing for the people who ultimately benefit from the decisions are paramount.

The University of the West Indies community expresses its deepest condolences to Sir Neville’s son and other family members. We recognise the sacrifices they have made to share Sir Neville with us and we thank him for his outstanding contribution to our country and region.

Professor Hilary Beckles, Vice-Chancellor of the University of the West Indies, believes that Sir Neville is “a great UWI man”, although he is not an alumnus of the local university. The Vice-Chancellor affirmed: “The advice he gave me during his tenure as Vice-Chancellor of Cave Hill Campus was invaluable and I am very grateful to him.”

Professor R Clive Landis, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of Cave Hill, added: “The campus community mourns the passing of one of the giants of the Cave Hill pantheon. Sir Neville’s tenure as Chair of the Campus Council was marked by significant growth in campus facilities, academic programmes and student enrolments. On behalf of the campus, I extend our deepest condolences to Sir Neville’s family and friends.”
