Top House Democrats take bipartisan tour of Butler Farm Show In Pennsylvania, In the place where former President Trump was allegedly nearly assassinated, law enforcement officials appear reluctant to speak publicly about “who is responsible.”
Representative Lou Correa, D-Calif. said the officers on the job are “excellent people” and that the breakdown that led to the fatal incident earlier this month demonstrated a serious lack of transparency in how departments work together.
Correa praised Pennsylvania State Police Superintendent Col. Christopher Parris for speaking out during Tuesday’s hearing, adding that local officials and law enforcement officers in the Butler area who he met with Monday were equally admirable.
Correa said local agency members approached him during a private congressional tour and told him they needed to talk further about what they were seeing on the ground.

“Several people there suggested to me that locals were reluctant to speak out,” he said. “But one person said he wasn’t sure who was in charge.”
“There was a local supervisor or a congressman who said we need to talk again. You (Congress) need to know more about what’s happening and what’s not happening. They’re not here (Washington). We need to know their opinions and their thoughts. These are the most critical people, so to speak,” he said.
Correa added that, relatively speaking, Private service is a smaller company, with about 3,600 agents, while Paris said PSP has about 6,000 employees.
“Local police and state police do provide a boost and in this case you need to do some work to improve the process,” Correa said.
He said the best approach after the House hearing with Parris and the visit to northwest Pennsylvania would be to “restart and really start doing a study of the Secret Service guidelines and what they do and how they approach and work with local public safety agencies.”

“We haven’t had an incident like this in 40 years,” he said, referring to the shooting of former President Reagan by John Hinckley Jr. in front of the Washington Hilton Hotel.
“I think a lot of things have changed over the last 40 years; maybe protocols, situations, environment,” Correa said. “I think we need to ask the Secret Service some tough questions, not because they’re not doing a good job, but because they’re expected to achieve 100 percent.”
Asked about the resignation of Secret Service Director Kimberly Chittel earlier Tuesday, Correa said that in reality, her “resignation doesn’t solve anything.”
“She gave a very poor performance at the hearing on Monday. I was not there,” he said. “Her resignation will not help resolve the issue. I will focus on resolving the issue.”

Correa, who served in the California Legislature when Kamala Harris was attorney general, said the important takeaways were not for him but for other Californians and Americans.
“The question is not the reaction of Congressman-elect Lew. I think a better measure of the answer to your question is to look at the enthusiasm of the people,” he said, noting that Harris’ campaign has raised nearly $90 million since President Biden dropped out of the race.

“This was something that was totally unexpected,” he said.
“Now, as a Congressman or a former state senator, I can tell you that I worked with Kamala when she was attorney general. I watched her address issues like sex crimes by funding DNA rape test kits. I saw her work, and I’m excited that her record will be presented to the people of this country.
“The former attorney general, the former sheriff of California is now running with her record. So it’s going to be a refreshing change in terms of the dynamic.”
Correa added that he was now hearing criticism about “age” shifting from Biden to Trump, but he also joked that “us older people do have something to contribute.”
Correa was one of three Democrats on the committee who traveled to inspect the site. Assassination attemptTwo other people, senior Mississippi Congressman Bennie Thompson and Maryland Congressman Glenn Ivey, also attended Tuesday’s hearing.
