AfricaPresse Northern Togo: Soldiers targeted in terrorist attack

[ad_1]

This weekend, a new attack against the Togolese armed forces took place in the north of the country, near the border with Burkina Faso. The terrorist group “Nusra al-Islam y al-Muslims” (JNIM) claimed responsibility for the attack. So far, the Togolese authorities have not communicated on the matter. On the other hand, Niger expressed its condolences through an official statement.

In a televised address, General Tiyani, president of Niger’s National Committee for the Protection of the Fatherland (CNSP), confirmed heavy casualties and material damage, but did not provide further details. The attack took place on Saturday, July 20, targeting the forward positions of the Togolese Defence and Security Forces in Kpekpakandi, in the Savanes region.

For more than 24 hours, messages and images have circulated on social networks describing a brutal attack on the Togolese army. Photos show military vehicles riddled with bullets and the bodies of soldiers lying on the ground. This tragic incident is a reminder of the frequent violence in the region.

The group Supporting Islam and Muslims (JNIM) claimed responsibility for the attack, which heightened the fears of the Togolese population. The Togolese authorities have not yet made an official statement. On social networks, many Togolese expressed their support for the armed forces and their concern about the situation.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time the region has been targeted. Two years ago, a similar attack took place in Kpekpakandi, in Kanjuaré state, which is also close to the border with Burkina Faso. The region is particularly vulnerable due to its proximity to active conflict zones.

The repeated attacks in northern Togo have raised questions about the security and stability of the region. The Togolese defense and security forces must increase their presence and vigilance to protect the local population. In addition, regional cooperation between neighboring countries is essential to effectively combat these terrorist organizations and ensure better security in the region.
