Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Civil Aviation Viliame Gavoka said he has appointed an aircraft accident investigator who will conduct a thorough investigation in accordance with Regulation 12 of the Civil Aviation (Accident Reporting and Investigation) Regulations 2009.
Earlier, a Northern Airways Britton Norman Islander (BN2A) aircraft landed outside the designated landing zone and sustained significant damage after colliding with a rock pile at the end of the runway.
Gavoka said the main purpose of the investigation is to prevent accidents, not to assign blame.
He said the incident took place at Gau Airport and has been classified as an accident.
“Fortunately, the two crew members and three passengers evacuated the aircraft safely and no one was injured. Emergency response procedures were immediately initiated,” Gavokar said.
