The Maltese art community is in shock after contemporary artist Marc Mallia died suddenly at the age of 59 after being rushed to hospital following an illness.

Mallia is a self-taught artist who has created abstract paintings and portraits using a variety of mixed media and ceramic sculptures, and whose signature bluntness has recently been revealed in Rib Eyean evening of personal stories in which he delivers his own unique social commentary.

The artist had just been exhibiting at the Sliema Arts Festival hours before he fell ill and was admitted to the intensive care unit at Mater Dei Hospital.

In December 2023, he suffered a heart attack and downplayed his condition in a Facebook post, saying he had now become a “Ford with one spring,” and told fans that he did not announce the news on Facebook “because GWS and ‘our prayers’ bored me to death.”

He was blunt, claiming that “he certainly didn’t want to benefit those bastards who saw I was broke and bought my paintings at half price, because they would swear to God that I would make 15,000 euros from each painting.”

Andre Borg, a friend of Malia, said on Facebook that Malia was a genuine voice who responded to the popular sentiment in his direct and extremely outspoken way.

“Until we met in his studio in Valletta last week. Recently we discussed over cappuccino an art project and cultural initiative between Malta and Lebanon, which we have been working on for several months. He was delighted to receive the sponsorship. R.I.P., if he knew… He will live forever in our collective memory as a unique legend.”

Maria was born in Pieta, Malta in 1965 and has worked in Malta, Monaco, the UK and the US.

Decorating them with found objects and elevating them to the level of high art, Mallia infuses them with a positive energy that he says is nourished by his “crazy obsession.”

Maria was the first to describe himself as a “maverick” in the art world. His most famous works are his Comic portrait and Crow SeriesHe has held several solo exhibitions in Malta and has exhibited at Royal Windsor Racecourse in the UK, Art Basel Miami and the Monaco Sports Club.
