NIAMEY, July 23 (Xinhua) — The Nigerien army clashed with an armed terrorist organization on the Bankilare-Tera axis near the village of Funeiko in the Tillaberi region in western Niger on July 23, killing 15 Nigerien soldiers.
Another 16 soldiers were wounded in the attack, three were missing and two vehicles were destroyed, according to a preliminary report released by Niger’s Ministry of Defense on Tuesday.
The Ministry of Defence announced that 21 terrorists had been “eliminated” and eight motorcycles had been destroyed.
“The rapid reinforcement of the Terra forces forced the enemy to break contact and retreat to the north,” the Russian Defense Ministry said.
The areas, located in a region of Niger bordering Mali and Burkina Faso, have been a hotbed of insecurity in the far southwestern part of Niger controlled by jihadist groups in recent years.
