In words that challenged the limits of history, ruling party deputy Omer Celik declared after the meeting of the Central Committee of the Justice and Development Party that the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974 not only protected the Turkish Cypriots but also “saved Cyprus”. Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias’ statement showed the necessity of the invasion and how the values of “peaceful operations” must be protected in the future.

“We warmly celebrate the 50th anniversary of the peace operation, which is one of the important milestones for us in Cyprus, for the Turkish Cypriots and for the Turkish Cypriot cause,” Celik said, also launching a verbal attack on the Greek defense minister, calling his remarks provocative.

“Of course, the simultaneous statement by the Greek Defense Minister once again shows that from now on we must vigorously protect the values of the peace operation. The Greek Defense Minister’s statement is as aggressive as ever. In the face of all this, the peace operation not only protected the Turkish Cypriots, but also saved the Greek Cypriots there from these gangs,” said the representative of Erdogan’s party.

He insisted that a federal solution for Cyprus was impossible, even accusing Greece of being unwilling to “federate” and “eager to…annex” all of Cyprus.

“As our president also pointed out, the whole world now believes that a federal solution is impossible. The statements of the Greek defense minister show that they are also in no mood for a federal solution and they want to annex all of Cyprus. But this is not going to happen anyway.”
