The latest regional statistics published today show that 40,191 people lived in the Gozo and Comino region in 2022, up from 39,287 in 2021. In the same year, the figure for Malta was 501,860.
The Malta National Statistics Office has today released Malta Regional Statistics 2024, a report compiled by the Regional, Geospatial, Energy and Transport Statistics Department in collaboration with various departments within the National Statistics Office.

In 2022, 40,191 people lived in the Gozo and Comino region, a slight increase from 39,287 in 2021.
The regions of Gozo and Comino have the highest proportion of people aged 30 to 39.
Population changes: 2017-2022
The highest population growth was among those aged 30 to 39, followed by those aged 70 to 79.
The highest increase in the foreign population was in the 30 to 39 age group.
The natural population growth rate will be negative in both 2021 and 2022.

In 2022, the number of registered marriages on Gozo and Comino decreased by one compared to the previous year.
family
The most common household size in the Gozo and Comino areas is a single-person household.
The rate of people at risk of poverty in Gozo and Comino is 15.1%, up from 12.4% the previous year.
Some social benefits: 2022
In Gozo and Comino, Victoria had the highest per capita expenditure on selected benefits, with expenditures exceeding €1,500 per capita, while Zeebug, Monxar and Garbe had the lowest per capita expenditures, at less than €1,000.

Gozo and Comino have 17,702 residents in full-time employment, an increase of 5.7% compared to 2021.
66.0% of Gozo and Comino residents work in the private sector.

The number of full-time employed people in the Gozo and Comino region was 13,661, an increase of 4.8% compared to 2021.
In the Gozo and Comino region, full-time males are mainly employed in wholesale and retail trade, motor vehicle and motorcycle repair, transport and warehousing, accommodation and food service activities, while females are mainly employed in public administration and defence, compulsory social security, education, human health and social work activities.
Commuter Workers: 2022
The total number of full-time employed residents in the Malta region of Gozo and Comino is 3,494, of whom 54.8% work in the public sector and the rest in the private sector.

Gross value added at basic prices: 2021
The GVA in the Gozo and Comino regions increased by 14.8% compared to 2021 respectively.
Gross value added increased in most sectors in the Gozo and Comino regions compared to the previous year.
The largest increases in the Gozo and Comino region were in wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, transport and warehousing, accommodation and food service activities, with an increase of 38.1%.
The GDP per capita for the Gozo and Comino region is 55.1% compared to the corresponding national estimate.

The majority of active enterprises operate in Gozo and Comino, but they have the smallest share, accounting for only 7.6% of the total number of active enterprises at the local unit level.

The total number of registered self-catering accommodation accounts for 78.1% of the total number of beds in the Gozo and Comino area.
Other self-catering options include apartments and villas with pools, which account for more than half of the total number of active holiday furnished options.
Domestic travel
In 2022, the total number of domestic trips to and from the Malta, Gozo and Comino region was 369,000, a decrease of 5.0% compared to 2021.

Livestock Head Counts and Licenses: 2023

Water – between 2018 and 2023
Seasonal peaks and troughs are most pronounced in the Gozo and Comino regions, characterised by a sharp increase in demand during the summer.
Reverse osmosis plants in the Gozo and Comino regions produced nearly 2 million cubic metres of water, resulting in a 22.9 per cent reduction in groundwater production in the same areas.
Garbage in 2022
The Gozo and Comino region saw an 11.6% increase in sorted dry recyclables collected via door-to-door collection compared to 2018.
The amount of sorted dry recyclables collected through recycling stations in 2018 was 415 tons, a year-on-year decrease of 38.2%.
Of all the materials collected through collection stations, paper had the highest collection share, at 42.9%.
In 2018, municipal waste generation in the Gozo and Comino region increased by 6.5%.
Photovoltaic panels (PV) Renewable energy – 2023:
…14.6% of the stock of PV facilities is located in the Gozo and Comino regions.
