On Tuesday, a Moscow court sentenced Russian journalist Mikhail Zygar in absentia to eight and a half years in prison for spreading false information about the Russian military, allegedly over posts on social networks about Russian war crimes committed in the Ukrainian city of Bucha 2022. AFP TASR reported.
In March, news broke that Zygar had been indicted in Russia. In early April, they announced they were looking for him.
Zygar, 43, is the former editor-in-chief of the independent TV station Dožď. Since October 2022, his name has appeared on the list of so-called foreign agents. Currently he writes for the German magazine Der Spiegel and the American newspaper The New York Times, The Moscow Times reports.
Dzigar is also known outside Russia for his bestselling book, The Kremlin Almighty. In War and Punishment, recently published in Slovak translation, he reflects on the roots of Russia’s hatred of Ukraine.
