The Health Ministry has announced plans to build an outpatient hospital inside the Somawathiya Raja Maha Viharaya temple complex to serve a large number of devotees and nearby communities.

The temple’s chief monk Pahamune Sri Sumangala Thera recently held a special discussion on the move.

The chief priest stressed that the temple receives a very respectable number of visitors of about 1,000 devotees every day, which exceeds 50,000 during the annual festivals and more than 100,000 during the Poson and Esala annual festivals.

Currently, sick devotees are sent to Polonnaruwa Hospital, but the completion of the new hospital will greatly simplify this process.

Following the directive of the health ministry, two ambulances from the Polonnaruwa General Hospital have been stationed at the temple to provide assistance to the sick devotees.

The new hospital will provide much-needed relief supplies to local villages including Sangawela, Kathuvanwala, Jharkanda and Kandakadu.

Health Minister Dr. Palita Mahipala briefed on the facilities of the new hospital, which include an outpatient department, emergency department, male and female wards and dormitories for doctors and medical staff.

The hospital will serve as a satellite hospital to Polonnaruwa General Hospital, with staff being deployed from the main hospital.

The cabinet will soon submit a special document for the construction of the hospital and Rs 10 crore will be allocated for the project this year.
