SANTO DOMINGO. – President Luis Abinader confirmed this Monday that the school feeding program implemented by the government and the Ministry of Education (Minerd), through the National Institute for Student Welfare (INABIE), has contributed to the reduction of monetary poverty in the country between 2022 and 2023.
«As you know, our monetary poverty has decreased by 4.4 percentage points between 2022 and 2023 and one of the programs that has contributed to this reduction is the school feeding program, which the government and Minerd are implementing through INABIE, ”the President said in the Los Angeles News program.
Speaking about the progress of INABIE, the President said that for the 2023-2024 school year, 966 million rations were delivered, including 312 million rations of nutritious bread and biscuits; 349 million rations of milk and dairy products; 2.9 million rations of fruit. 269 million were distributed in the extended modality; 26 million in the rural and border modality and others; 469 million in the Oportunidad 14-24 program; and 3.8 million in the Prepara program.
Likewise, he assured that of the 71 million servings of milk served at breakfast, for the first time in history, 100% was produced on the territory of the country. He also added: “We at the Ministry of Agriculture hold meetings every Monday with INABIE, economic kitchens, social programs and other institutions that consume rural products, agricultural products, to balance supply and demand. “If there is a shortage of chicken, other meats are consumed and we coordinate like never before. “
In this sense, he mentioned the School Health Program, through which, according to the President, 146,420 students’ visual health was affected, of whom 9,056 wore ophthalmic lenses; the Hearing Health Department said that 12,245 people benefited, of whom 1,587 wore hearing aids. Likewise, he noted that 254 INAIPI children were treated.
On oral health, Abinader said 102,888 beneficiaries have been served, including 668,368 oral interventions and 960 children from INAIPI; On preventive health, he said more than 1.8 million people benefited from the National Deworming Day and 14 million doses of anti-worm, stain, fungus, lice, influenza virus and vitamin deficiency medicines were distributed.
School props
In another order, he stressed that school supplies will be delivered intact to all students. He also said that the clothing needed for school in the next academic year (2024-2025) will be delivered on time.
He reiterated that 1.8 million kits will be provided for the same number of students, more than 6,000 public schools will benefit more than 720,000 families, saving 5,000 RD$ per kit of Polo shirts, pants, socks, shoes, backpacks, notebooks, rulers, pencils and pencils.
Unified entry status
The President explained that for the 2024-2025 academic year, more than 1,267,643 kits have been delivered so far, impacting 4,722 centers.
He said that these products have been delivered 100% in the departments of Montecristi, Dahabón, Santiago Rodríguez, Elias Pina, Independiente, Pedernales, San Juan de la Maguana, Bahoruco, Peravia, Don Nuel, Santiago, España, María Trinidad Sánchez, Samana, Hato Mayor, El Cebo, San José de Ocoa, San Cristóbal and Valverde.
He added that between 25 and 60 percent benefited in Barahona, Santo Domingo, Distrito Nacional, Sánchez Ramírez and San Pedro de Macorís.
