French presidential envoy to Lebanon Jean-Yves Le Drian visited Riyadh last week and met with Saudi royal adviser Nizar Alullah to discuss the situation of the Lebanese presidency, diplomatic sources told Lebanon Daily News.
During the meeting, Le Drian briefed Alula on the results of the G5 initiative and his recent discussions with US envoy Amos Hochstein. The G5, which includes the ambassadors of the United States, France, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Egypt, approached opposition lawmakers earlier this month with two proposals aimed at facilitating presidential elections.
The opposition proposed holding presidential consultations in parliament, but Speaker Nabih Berri would not participate. They suggested Berri should call for an open presidential election meeting, with MPs and political parties consulting outside the parliament hall after the first round of voting, before returning for the subsequent vote.
